Hardware

Display

As time passes, people gradually start looking for larger screen phones. When the Galaxy Grand was launched initially, people thought the 5 inch WVGA display was ‘big’. However, after a few months, the same people want an even larger screen. Samsung address this by adding 0.25 inches to the diagonal size of the screen, totalling 5.25 inches now, on the Grand 2. The resolution will be far better as well, 1280 x 720p as opposed to 800 x 480p on the Grand. Also, there shouldn’t be a great difference in the footprint of the device. This would mean that you would be able to use the larger screen with almost the same sized phone.

Camera and Storage

Nothing really to choose here. Both phones pack the same imaging hardware, at 8MP rear along with a 2MP front. However, you can expect the Grand 2 to have a better quality lens and probably a larger aperture one as well. It still remains to be seen if the Grand 2 will outperform its younger sibling. Storage wise, both devices feature 8GB of on-board ROM with a microSD slot for expansion up to 64GB.

Processor and Battery

The Grand 2 gets a major bump in this segment. Not only does it feature a more powerful quad core processor, but also comes with more RAM. This extra RAM will complement the processor well, while offering a better multitasking experience. The Grand 2 offers a 1.2GHz quad core processor along with 1.5GB of RAM, while the initial version comes only with a dual core processor and 1GB of RAM. Difference will be felt in almost every task, and you should definitely go for the Grand 2 if the difference in price is not more than 3-4k INR. The Grand 2 comes with a larger battery as well. It is now at par with the flagship Galaxy S4 with a 2600mAh battery, while the initial Grand features only a 2100mAh to power the large 5” screen phone.

Conclusion

It is pretty clear that the Grand 2 does quite a bit well. It will outperform the older Grand on most segments including processing, battery life, and perhaps even imaging. Again, price is yet to be known, which will play a big role as usual. If the Grand 2 is launched for anything under 20k INR, we think it will be a good buy, and might cause people to say goodbye to the older Grand.
